Really looking forward to this hike. I've canoed the Big South Fork of the Cumberland several times, but never backpacked the area.

Anyway, was wondering about the overall schedule, meetup time and place, etc. I'll be coming from the Nashville area.

Also, seriously debating purchasing an "actual" camera, instead of using my cell phone for pics, which does take good pics, but again it's a phone not a camera!

Day one - Rock Creek loop/John Muir Trail (same one he travelled from Indiana to Mexico) to Sheltowee Trace to Double Falls.

Day two - Head to Crystal falls, take Hidden passage back up to Sheltowee Trace, John Muir trail back to cars. A 1/4 mile walk on a gravel road makes this a loop trail so no shuttle is needed.

Appx.20 miles but we will be stopping to see waterfalls, etc.

Last Baking Trip At Minister Creek - re: water filter

I do not have a filter; but do have some purification tabs that you are more than welcome to use!  I just strain the water through a liner (you can use no-see-um mesh or a coffee filter or a NEW (lol) pair of hosery) then pop in the tabs after its filtered f/ the large debris- works for me :-)  I have yet to get a filter; but it is on my "wish list" as well, I just got a new tent, bag and pad this year, so next year right ;-) (lol)!!!  See you on the trail!!!!

Last Baking Trip At Minister Creek - Camp Stove??

Hope every one is having a GREAT day and is as excited as we are!!!

How long does it take to get there f/ Akron???  I am going to be driving through there - but if I am coming f/ Newark, so I will have to leave Fri night, if it's not too far f/ Akron, then we will stay the night in Akron and you can pool w/ us!!  From Newark, we have around 8 hrs!!!  So I will DEF have to leave Fri... if it is too far (more than 3 hrs or so) you are more than welcome to pool w/ us and grab a hotel Fri night... I just can't drive that long and hike all in one day (lol)!!!

Quehanna Figure Eight - re: Water source

Posted By:JonW

I sent a note to the Moshannon State Forest concerning this.  The Forest District Manager replied that the only water that is still affected by the well blow-out is the spring flowing from the Punxsutawney Hunting Club.  Looking at a map, this would flow into Coldstream Run, to Trout Run, and then into Susquehanna River at Shawville - all south of the QT.  They indicated that all other tests of water in the area are back to baseline as of August 30.

Good news for hikers on the QT.  Bad news for those along the affected drainage.

Mosquito Creek - water at Quehanna

Posted By:Aaron

There is a rumor going around that the water at Quehana is not safe to drink even filtered or boiled. I just spoke with the real ranger (not the lady that takes license plate numbers) and there is NO issue with the water, it’s the same as its been before. Again, NO issue with water, you do have to treat it for bio hazards.

Quehanna Figure Eight - re: Water source

Posted By:medicjimr

Ok thats sounds better than what the lady told me that was taking plate numbers at the trail head I was on the trail during the explosion and was told we were past the site of contamination anyway so when the signs were still up I asked why. wasn't trying to dampen anyones plans the QT is a great trail I enjoy backpacking some of it every year I have done the whole loop and the WCCC as well

Quehanna Figure Eight - re: Water source

Posted By:Trailhead

Thanks for the heads-up. I called the Parker Dam State Park office. I was told that that the EPA has certified that Laurel Run and Little Laurel Run, both of which feed the lake at Parker Dam, are not contaminated. However signs that were posted on the Quehanna Trail warning of contamination have been left in place for the time being as a precaution. Little Laurel Run generally parallels the Quehanna Trail for almost 3 miles as the trails heads eastward out of Parker Dam. Laurel Run feeds into Parker Lake and then out of the lake and parallels the Quehanna Trail from mile marker 69.5 to roughly mile marker 66.2 at which point the Trail makes an abrupt turn eastward away from Laurel Run which continues on to eventually empty into the Bennet Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek. There are not any other sections of the Quehanna Trail that come near these water sources.

Our hike takes place on the Quehanna plateau. Our water sources start from springs up on the plateau and drain downwards. The well mishap and any resultant contamination of water sources was at an elevation a few hundred feet below our water sources, and since water doesn’t run uphill, we are more than safe. We are also approximately 18 miles as the crow flies from the well mishap.

My condolences to you and your family, Harry, and you're all in my thoughts.

I'm going to attempt a little bit of cooking, although I should clarify that I do not have mad skillz when it comes to anything with fire.  I'm hoping the food is somewhere in the vicinity of edible, but I make no guarantees.  Hecklers will go hungry.  :D

If you have ideas to share, that would be awesome!  I look forward to seeing everyone on the trail this weekend!

Sorry everyone, but I have to drop off this trip because of a death in the family and funeral is on sat of the start of trip. The great news is the trip will go on as scheduled because, Bellalyra (Andrea) has agreed to take over as organizer. The change should take place in the next few days.
I know that several of you have been on baking trips in the past with me and hope you will try some of the baking methods from preveous trips, and I think that Andrea is going to attempt some. So, again sorry for having to drop off trip, but hope you all have a great one, looks like weather will be great.

West Rim Trail - re: Carpool?

Posted By:JonW

I have to drive as I am staying for a second hike.

My three sons are coming (Wibes, Benjamin, and awesomeo) and currently they plan to drive so they have a way back.  We are leaving early afternoon and plan to leave one vehicle at the south end and take one vehicle to the campground where I have reservations.  (Leonard Harrison SP)

The vehicle at the south end can be used to transport all drivers back to the north where our hike starts.

I really hope that we take, at most, two more vehicles.

I know that limeygal is always willing to share a ride and lives east of Cleveland.  Both superhiker and artsyfartsy start on just to the south side of Cleveland and are inclined to share rides as well.  I do not know when they plan to leave.

If all can come in one vehicle, great.  If two, that is fine as well.  I will leave it to the four of you to sort out what works.  In any event, this crew can come directly to Leonard Harrison.  Saturday morning, we either back track a few miles to Wellsboro for a restaurant breakfast or eat in the park.

I will send out a note to all about this.  Majority rules unless there is a tie then I decide.

...one of my faves. Hammersley is awesome. Remember that you will also pass through the town of Cross Fork. You can get lunch and beers there. The trail passes between two bar/restaurants. Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness - Dates and Cost

Posted By:Switchback

As with any outing, weather can play big role. As this is a decent drive, this trip should be pushed backed if forecast is not worth it. If people could let me know what dates they can take for this trip, we can have a backup plan. I would be available any weekend and can take days leading up to/or after the weekend. Optimal window would close by second Oct weekend. I would also be open to adding one or two more days to this trip if people want to spend more time there.

Ive also recieved interest from members who cant make the scheduled dates, if anyone has interest and these dates dont work, let me know.

And to address questions of cost/transportation. Cost would include parking $5-10 a day per car. Free options exist but are secluded side road parking. Tolls from the PA/NY state line to Syracuse are prob about $12. And obviously gas. I would assume most would want to carpool to have some company and defray costs.

Mosquito Creek - Friday Night...

Posted By:sbanner26

Hi Steve, my girlfriend and I were thinking about heading out on Friday night and camping at the Meeker camp site, where Meeker trail intersects the East Cross Connector. I believe you will be passing right through there on Saturday morning, correct? Do you see any problem with us joining you at that point for the rest of your trip? If not, do you foresee any headaches with us finding the campsite after dark on Friday? I didn't have any problems finding the Red Run site after dark this past April, but that site is right off the road and there were others there with a fire ahead of me. What do you think?

Very nice -thanks for the map. If you want more detailed info on our trip, I'm taking it from the MidAtlanticHikes website - click on WV trips, its titled Cranberry Wilderness 1-BP 24-27 miles.

They have maps and you can custom google directions to the trailhead where we'll all be meeting.
I use their website for most of my WV and VA trips.

Booked. Site 25. i will email all of you the conf. number.
site 29 was no longer available...and handlebar? yes. they have a senior discount. but i went ahead and booked it regular...since it was the only one other than electric sites left and PA state parks need the money bad (OPyle state park is cutting operating budgets by 7% this year due to funding :( )
so i figured the extra buck a piece wouldnt kill yuns ;)

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

Posted By:litolpea

FABULOUS. then we can get there a little bit earlier too.
i have a feeling we will get let out at LATEST, 3.
whats the earliest you can get to exit 29? (and no, you dont have to figure it out now...we can work on it the week of. no worries....)

i will reserve the RBsite now.
since im looking to waste time before heading to a faculty office for work shizzie.

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

the Director is pretty cool and has a pattern of letting us go early on the eve of something. Normally we just run the streets downtown amok, but I will plan on using that extra quality time for spending with you guys.

who knew the rsx was a popular choice among backpackers! ;) my rsx and i will met you all at the trailhead, or points between, next friday. i am looking forward to this trip; shark's comments and notes on local carnivorous flora suggest this will be a awesome trip! i love wva!

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

Posted By:Footloose

yee ha !! what a great bunch. Yes I can leave anytime. Your evolving plans sound all good.

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

Posted By:litolpea

this seems to be perfect!
caveman and handlebar, you two riding together.
myself, footloose and prolly pat
and wetrodent coming from VA to meet us.

footloose, what is the earliest you can leave?

i say lets aim for the Rbwinter walk in sites. they were two of the 5 available when i checked.
pat, since you are a bit tied up with things, dont worry about the in state savings stuffs. i can book em. unless, handlebar, you wanna try the old man route?
ps. yes. we have hiked together. on a winter warm up... am i correct, that this is the backside of you...hehe: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2616/4147689027_66868f4a96_z.jpg

anyhooo..so, picking up pat at 7 or 8, would put the three of us there at 11ish.

a few thoughts on that...if the 3 of you are pretty much getting there earlier than us, and wanted to set up camp, then meet us out at the animal hospital with 2 cars, we can leave two of them there, and take one back. this would leave enough room for 5 passengers, and the 3 remaining packs...
with 6 of us with packs, having two cars at the end is gonna be needed....then we can flip a coin or all drive back to RBW that monday to retrieve the remaining car, and leave from there.
we can also opt to meet you guys at rbw on friday, but that would mean extra time for shuttling, and us three getting our tents up later.

there are two more options of sorts.
and this is in the event that they let us out of work early....which, they notoriously do on a holiday weekend eve...
but that might just make everything too complicated. lol
so sticking with the above, im fine with. i can go to the gym for a couple of hours if we get let out at 3.
and pat, any chance you would make it to exit 29 before 8?

ps. i have maps from the trail guide, and the guide book as well. does anyone else have maps of this section, or should i make copies?

yes this is Caveman of Ohio class of 07. I get off of work at 4:30 and can be down in Youngstown at 5:30. If this does not work than I can drive myself or catch a ride with someone else coming through.

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

Posted By:Handlebar

I'm confused, but as the only Senior Citizen on this trip, that's my right. Plus, as the only Senior Citizen on this trip, I'm going to be reasonable and split my food, water, and fuel into 5 stuff sacks so y'all youngins' can carry it for me! Hah!

Second, Litolpea, I probably have met you, but since I'm a Senior Citizen I suffer CRS (Can't Remember Sh**) Syndrome. I'm sure it'll come back to me when we meet again.

I'm thinking the best approach for Friday night will be the RBWinter SP option. Might even want to consider the new walk in sites to be away from the front country experience. Here's the scoop from the web site: "7/25/2010 6:06:00 PM R.B. Winter offers a new camping experience. On July 20, 2010 R.B Winter opened 2 walk-in campsites, sites 25 and 29, for those individuals that wish to camp a short distance from the main campground. Access to the walk-in sites is from the trail located between sites 28 and 30. Parking for these new sites is located on old site 29." Hmmm!, I wonder if they have a senior citizen rate that's lower than the in-state rate?

re: carpooling. If I go early, then I doubt I can drive out with Patrick (I assume it's him you're picking up at exit 29 of I-80)since he works for the City of Pittsburgh and we know civil servants never take an early quit. So Caveman, what's up. You were "Caveman of Ohio" on the AT, right? And used to live in Ashtabula County? Do you want to ride out with me. If so when would could you be in Youngstown?

Another Notch on my Mid State Belt - re: Car pools

Posted By:litolpea

first of all. *i* am the only girl. therefore...YOU guys are carrying me. and my stuff.
just sayin woodie.

second. handlebar..i seem to remember you. did we hike together before? cos im originally from the YO and i believe we had a convo about that.
lol

re: the carpooling.
so, footloose is driving with me. caveman? yes, it means it would put us at the animal hospital at 11ish. (altho, i am not quite sure they "wood" admit me after 10 :P SHUT UP PATRICK!)
it's "one of those" ya know?

options:
as HB said, he can go early and blaze a path.
cave, you can opt to go early too and coordinate with him.
we can make it easy on ourselves for such a late hour and i can nab a tent site at the state park (they had 5 left when i checked...) RBWsp isnt too bad. its small, and i have stayed there before.
patsquatch, i can either pick you up on i80 or you can ride with HB.
if you ride with HB and i get outta work early, FL, are you able to leave earlier?

so many options. the only pressing one? do you all want me to book a site at the sp for friday? its $25 (pat, is it cheaper for you?)

so, $4 and some change each.

cranberry wilderness - re: Car pool?

Hey, Handlebar, I am coming from Cleveland area.  I may be interested in sharing  the ride from your place.  I drive a Toy. Matrix, which would also be fine for two and tight for 3 (probably tighter than your's if I have the right vehicle), although I might be able to get my wife's van if the numbers add up.  My plans are in a little flux (my daughter is trying to get a ride to Charleston, WV for the weekend; when I told her I was leaving at 6 am or so on Fri, her interest level waned, but I'm not sure I've heard the last), so I'll check back later in the week or early next week with the final word.

So, is anyone interested in car pooling to the trailhead? I'm in Youngstown OH very close to I-680 and am on the way to WV from Cleveland or points north of I-76 and west of the OH-PA line. I can drive (my RSX fits two + gear comfortably or 3 + gear a little cramped). I can offer secure parking at my house if you don't want to drive all the way or can meet someone along the way. ---Handlebar

Lil' Pea and all,

Just signed up. I'm suffering a bit of withdrawal since I bailed from my CDT thru hike attempt in late July and was actually trying to figure out how to fit a MST thru hike into my busy schedule. Since I retired, it seems I'm always busy.

I'm in Youngstown, drive an Acura RSX that can hold one other hiker and gear comfortably or two others a bit cramped. Patsquatch (is he now Woodsquatch?) and I have carpooled in the past from Rte 8, or I live just a short way from I-680 in Youngstown and can offer secure parking to someone or two from farther east or north who might not want to drive the whole way. Alternatively, since I could drive ahead and blaze a way to wherever we'll be camping Fri night.

Yeah, I've spent the night at that site twice...both times on a foot of snow.  I would say it is a good 2.5 trail miles south of the park and a decent climb as it is on the TOP of the ridge.  I like the site though.

Old Market has an array of adult libations to choose from.  They should make you happy.

re: camping friday...i seem to remember a site about a mile or two south of 192. it was on the east side of the trail...
had this firepit:

and as i was reading through someones trail notes, they indicated that site as well.
i could be fuzzy on the distance.
do you recall?

another option is to just book a night at the campground. if 6 of us go, it would be like 4 bucks a piece, and currently, there are 5 spots open for tents. i have stayed there before, tho not on a holiday friday. (ugh)
i think i will let the crew decide...whoever the crew may end up being!

thanks for the heads up on the eatery. they server beer? *grin*

This is a great section of trail!

I'm not sure about the camping around RB Winter.  It is in a steep valley.  If you choose to camp free trail-side, I think you will have to get up to the ridge top south of the park (at least 2.5 miles).  I think it would be about the same north of the park.  The ridge to the north, if memory serves, is pretty rocky.

Lock Haven eats/beverage:  The Old market.  A neat old building updated and turned into a restaurant.  It is in downtown Lock Haven.  Good place.

We stayed at a great site along White Deer Hole Creek our second night out.  It is a forked creek framed by rhododendrons with a healthy flow of water and a fire ring.  There is a lot of camping through this section, but I really liked this one.

Be careful to stay on the trail approaching Ravesburg State park.  There are dozens of trail intersections and it can be a bit confusing.  Nippenose Valley offers incredible views as does the vista of Gates of Pine Creek and Lock Haven before you drop down for the road walk (which is kind of nice as road walks go).

Hope you have a great time!

You are awesome! I'm going to post my details which sound similar to your trip except in the opposite direction.

Thanks again - I'll use your tips.

cranberry wilderness - re: Loop

Posted By:Shark

Look up the Cranberry Wilderness trip that I led previously (Both under the Trip Calendar and Trip Log tabs.  See date below:

09/01/2007 Shark Cranberry Wilderness and Backcountry - Middle Fork/North Fork WV 26.50

On Middle Fork, make sure you camp before the hairpin turn at about mile 9 on the first day if you want to camp near water. Another option would be to cache some water up near the intersection of the connector trail and the Highlands Scenic Highway. I prefer camping near a stream primarily for tranquility though.

Day 2, we camped on the upstream side of the Limestone Plant prior to reaching the Gravel Road along the Cranberry. We crossed to the other side of the North Fork since there weren't many campsites on the trail side. Be minedful of precipitation or you may not be able to get back across in the morning.

This is only one option. There are many others, many of which I have not done. Also, watch precip for final crossing of the Middle Fork of the Williams to get back to the cars. It may be a good idea to park an extra car near the Cranberry Botanical Gardens trailhead (near gate) in case the weather changes. I recommend visiting the garden and the visitor center either before or after the trip. You get to see pitcher plants, cranberry and sundew along the boardwalk.

I can't go in Aug but I was planning a trip in October. Looking forward to see which loop you do

cranberry wilderness - Loop

Posted By:Shark

Not sure which loop you are doing from the descriptions but bear in mind that if you are doing the North-South Trail to loop, there is no water for 10 miles. It is all on a ridge with no crossings or springs. Sometimes there are nasty frog puddles when it rains though.

Enjoy. Cranberry is cool

Chuck Keiper East - re: Need some input...

Posted By:redjester

25 miles with nearly 3.5 miles up and down. Sounds pretty intense but I would give it a shot. My only request would be that we car pool. 16 hours is a lot of drive time.

Chuck Keiper East - Need some input...

Posted By:Keira

I realize that this is somewhat last minute, however, how would everyone feel about possibly changing the location of our hike? I've had some extra time free up at work and am considering hiking the Devil's Path in the Catskill's, NY. It is a 11/12 difficulty requiring scrambling in some spots, about 25 miles long, end to end. We would bag 5 of the 35 Catskill High Peaks with at total of 18,000 feet in elevation gain/loss. It is about an 8 hour drive from Cleveland, and so we would start hiking on Saturday instead of Friday. We would finish up Monday morning. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil%27s_Path_%28hiking_trail%29 for a trail description.

I'll only change things if everyone is in agreement. Let me know what you think.

If you plan on coming in after 8 pm, you need to cross the road from Sandstone Springs parking to get on the Tanbark Trail. On some maps the spring is shown as a picnic area.
Make sure you have extra water capacity for Sat night, no water on overlook. Looking forward to a great weekend.

Not a problem, just a short hike from Sandstone springs to camp .  We'll leave a light on for you. You'll need to cross the road from the parking lot. Trail is well used and well marked.  looking forward to seeing you again.

Minister Moonshine - Rainbow Family Gathering

Posted By:Brownie

A gathering of the Rainbow Family is scheduled just a few miles south of where we will begin our trip, July 1st thru the 7th.  An estimated 15,000 to 30,000 people are expected.  My wife and I ran into better than a hundred or so on forest service road 119 this past Sunday.  The family is slowly filtering into the forest so I am not sure what to expect as far as parking or camping is concerned.  From what we saw, LNT principals are not high on their priorities.  We may have to do a little improvising as far as  parking/camping.  I'm going to contact the National Forest Service to get their recomendations.

a beginner with the basic gear could go on this trip. there is some climbing and its at 5800 ft. elevation which is not much but its higher then northeast ohio. but i would not say that a beginner should not go. this is by far the best club trip for a long weekend.

first day is about 4 miles all up hill (+1500 ft.)
2ed day up and down all day for 10 miles.
3ed day mostly down hill.

Haystack Knob - Ramp-tastic-TOO (II) - re: Weather

It'll be fine. I never carry more than 1 liter when moving around up there, even when really dry (which this isn't yet). I have waypointed the reliable sources when up there in a severe drought.

Unfortunately, one of the sources is so shallow, I can't dip without a sierra cup. So filters help.

Keep in mind that both camps are dry so you have to bring water to camp for evening and breakfast on both nights.

Night 1 is about 1 mile from water to camp. This source is on the way to camp.
Night 2 is about 300-400 yards. This source is a pickup once camp is reached.

30% tonight and 50% tomorrow.

I wouldn't bet on it but if it does, we'll have some mud to contend with on the trail in a few places (nothing major).

If it does, we will still need filters for the Sunday morning portion.

Depending on how many filters we have, we may leave some behind in the cars if people are willing to share.

Haystack Knob - Ramp-tastic-TOO (II) - re: Weather

Haystack Knob - Ramp-tastic-TOO (II) - Weather

Posted By:Shark

Weather looks great.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of exposed areas (i.e. not under leaf canopy) where we are headed and the leaves are fully out in places.

You may want to consider a brimmed hat and/or sunblock to keep from burning unless you already have a good base tan.

Also, last rain was over a week ago. Things are probably dry. As a group, we should probably bring about 2-4 filters. Most places we can dip water (if that is you style) but on Sunday morning, the only source is a small spring seep. Should be flowing with what we have had but may require pumps only to get at the water. Lunch on Sunday may or may not have water.

Looking forward to it.

For any reason, if you can't make it or are running late, please call ahead. Call by at least 9am before I go out of cell service. Cell number is listed on my profile and should be on the trip page as well.

Not sure how my comment got posted a second time, but I will say I did some research on this issue. With searches of many of the local news sites, the only hit I got about an arsonist in that area was from this web site! So, someone may have encountered him/her/it once but I am guessing it was a relatively isolated incident as there was zero news coverage. I agree - me not like fire! Anyway, I forgot Taijiguy's been studying Kung Fu, so we should be safe as long as any towering flames can be subdued by a kick to the solar plexus!

Ok, that's good.  I'm not so much worried about the arsonist as I am the possibility of getting caught in a raging inferno.  I'd like to know my other options.

Quehanna Trail a.k.a. Inca Meet & Greet - re: Arsonist

Posted By:Trailhead

I forgot to mention earlier that there is no cell coverage in the Quehanna area. As far as the Spot is concerned, it is a 100 mile round trip drive to get it and at this point I don't consider it worth the trip. We'll be a group of 6-10 people, something to be said for safety in numbers.

As far as an emergency bail-out plan, there definitely are possibilities. I'll review our route and then we all can discuss when we meet.

And lastly, Yes, Stepbreathe, seriously, I'll bring the machete if will help some to feel better.

Quehanna Trail a.k.a. Inca Meet & Greet - re: Arsonist

Posted By:Bellalyra

lol  I doubt I would be able to do any damage anyway.  I'm not proficient with weapons handling.

Are there any emergency ways out of our normal route and back to the parking lots that we could all know and agree to use?  Also, is the Spot thing a possibility?

I'm sure we'll all be fine, but it doesn't hurt anything to have a "just in case" plan of action.

Dolly Sods - our trip

Aaron and I are coming from Columbus. We're driving down Thursday. Let's all meet at the parking area in front of Bear Rocks at noon.

I'll be driving a black saab and I carry a yellow pack - I don't think I've met any of you yet, so that's to help find me :)

Day one, we won't stop for lunch, but snack breaks whenever anyone wants one! I think I remember the only water being near our campsite, so prepare to carry what you need.

I'm bringing a tarp and water filter to share. It would be great if someone else would bring another tarp and one more filter.

Please email your cell phone to me before thursday.

see ya soon!

Baking Trip Semi Annual #2 At Minister Creek - re: water filtration

Posted By:hclayton

No problem with filtration, I know several filters will be on the trip, and I use chemical treatment that I will share. Also, if your meals need boiling water as long as you bring them to a rolling boil the water will be safe to use. The water in the creek by where we are camping is crystal clear, so just have to kill the little buggies.

FYI,
We stream hiked the Right Fork from Alder Run to the Forks last Labor Day. There are many places you can camp in seclusion up the Right Fork and probably the Left Fork as well. You just have to go about 1/2 mile upstream from the actual Forks. You will probably be camping in areas that haven't been camped in before (or recently) so please follow LNT to help prevent making this area even more overused.

Black Forest Trail - BFT

Posted By:Davo

Qi Wiz, your going to love this trail! Did section hikes in '07 & '08, and a complete loop in '09. www.pinecrk.com Pine Creek Outfitters has a 2008 Guide and Map for the BFT. Excellent Guide Book and the Map is better than the Fire Fighter's version. Leave the GPS at home, BFT very well blazed. 4 days is the way to go to appreciate the scenery. Bring your hiking poles and use the high water routes if it has been really wet: the +/- 13 crossings of County Line Branch get tougher as you go along if the water is really high. Manor Hotel puts out some good chow for an after hike celebration. Have fun.

Spring On The Quehanna - re: TICKS

Posted By:JonW

I buy my permethrin from REI, usually this: http://www.rei.com/product/768970

You can likely find it at other 'outdoor' stores, perhaps even a Dick's.

I now soak my clothes in a large zip lock bag.  Not underwear, undershirts, or socks.  I soak my pants and long sleave shirts.  I shake the mixture up (it comes ready to use) and pour enough in to wet the clothes.  They soak for 2+ hours.  Then I remove them (wearing waterproof gloves so as not to touch the liquid) and hang until dry.

Once dry, the permethrin is bound to the fabric and will not wash off in streams or rain.

Sawyer (the manufacturer of the mixture) indicates that the permethrin will be effective through six washings and 42 days in the sun.  I store my treated clothing out of the light so I get season out of them.

Spring On The Quehanna - re: TICKS

Posted By:MJ

Where does one aquire permethrin and what is the procedure for soaking your clothes?  Do you dilute it with water?  How long do you soak?  Does it cause any skin irritation?

Sun, Surf, and Slime on the WCT - re: WCT Permit

Posted By:Alan

Sounds great Rob, just let me know how much and where to send the payment and it will be done.
As for the permit May 1 it has to be made at 10AM (EST) on the dot. I called last year and it's busy until 10AM then I kept calling until I was put on their hold for 15 minutes then somebody finally came on, I thought I should hang up but luckily I kept waiting. I don't know if I got lucky or this is just normal procedure. I am more nervous about getting a permit this time around because they now have online reservations to compete with the phone reservations, this group is larger than the 2 I made reservations last year for, and finally the start and finish dates are on the weekend.
I am fine with weekday start and finish dates as long as the finish date is not pushed out too far, I have another trip I committed to after the WCT. I don't know how the rest of the group feels about that.
I can help in any way so please keep that in mind. I just don't know what the process will be like this year, they only let 40-50 people on per day, I think closer to 40. I really hope we get the dates requested and it all works out smoothly.

Sun, Surf, and Slime on the WCT - re: WCT Permit

Posted By:Rob

May 1 is the first day we can reserve permits according to the web sites I have seen.

·  Hikes starting in June can be reserved as of April 1,

·  Hikes starting in July can be reserved as of May 1,

·  Hikes starting in August can be reserved as of June 1

·  Hikes starting in September can be reserved as of July 1

As for reservations, Alan, you and I can work out payment for the permit.

I just hit all my clothes with permethrin in preparation for my hike this weekend. It is good stuff and served me very well all last year.

Sun, Surf, and Slime on the WCT - re: WCT Permit

Posted By:Alan

Is there any significance to the 90 days date?

Spring On The Quehanna - re: TICKS

Posted By:JonW

You really do not have time to do this now, but if you spray (or soak) your clothing with permethrin and allow to dry; ticks, mosquitoes, etc. will be killed upon contact with the clothing.  Great stuff used correctly.

Spring On The Quehanna - re: TICKS

Posted By:trail breaker

My understanding is that they do not cause Lime Disease this early in their cycle, spring. I will have my trusty tick puller with me if needed. Should not be a problem this time of year. Some time ask me about the special tick I got.

Spring On The Quehanna - re: TICKS

Posted By:Kev78

I'm guessing you'll encounter quite a few.  We did the Chuck Keiper last weekend and they were everywhere.  Probably flicked over 100 off my clothes between the 2 days.  Had a few that managed to make it past my clothing...

Are we going to each individually attempt to get a permit or as a group? If as a group what will be the process to make payment to the permit reserver/holder and when should we make the payment. I understand that all the reservations will depend on the permit dates but just want to make sure I forward the payment for the permit and any expenses as to make sure everything goes smoothly if we are doing so as a group.

NCT Kellettville to Minister Creek - Update

Posted By:fairweather

Hello everyone:

Our trip is only three days away and I wanted to address a few concerns, and give everyone a weather update..

First off there seems to have been some confusion about the distance off the trip. Maybe because minister creek is in the title? We will be covering about 16 miles on Saturday and less than 4 miles on Sunday. We will be using Friday to set up our shuttle.

Also I would like to encourage everyone to car pool as much as possible. Beside the usual environmental concern there is also a political concern. Although the campground is closed, and they don’t have any regulation against overnight parking. I don’t wont to give them a reason to make a regulation by taking up all the available parking. Plus I think it’s the considerate thing to do.

As far as the weather. It looks like we are going to get lucky with the rain. But we are going to see some cold overnight lows. They are calling for a low in the upper twenties Friday night, and lows in the upper thirties Saturday night.

If anyone has any problems or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me. You can E-mail me at apstudio03@gmail.com or call my cell at (814) 229-4814.

Hope to see you all Friday.
Thanks

It would be awesome to finally do this trail. Last year I had all the plans and reservations made and paid for then the unthinkable happened my friend while hiking hurt his knee, had to be hospitalized, and we had to cancel with just a few days before departure. I did not think it was wise to backpack solo on this trail for obvious reasons. I tried again this year but I could find no takers. I have the book for the trail, a small hiking guide. I know a lot about this trail. I am a very seasoned backpacker and have backpacked in some similiar remote areas, not just in the USA. I was hoping and waiting for someone maybe from NEOH to schedule this awesome adventure/outing. Could you please add me to the list? It would be truly fantastic to achieve the completion of this trail esp. this year!
Thanks,
Alan

2011 AT Springer Mtn to Hot Springs and Beyond? - re: Hot Springs to Damascus

Posted By:Qi Wiz

I think the idea of posting an additional Hot Springs to Damascus trip is a good one. If all goes well I (and any others with me) will join you. If I am able to take off 5 weeks, I've pretty much decided to end in Damascus for the end of Trail Days, even if I have to shuttle there from somewhere in NC.

2011 AT Springer Mtn to Hot Springs and Beyond? - Hot Springs to Damascus

Posted By:stepbreathe

Hey Rob - I'm really interested in the "Beyond" section of your hike. I'd be interested in coordinating with your arrival in Hot Springs, then continuing on to Damascus. The issue with this is that you will already have your trail legs and I'm having a hard time picturing keeping up, especially considering I would plan to arrive in Hot Springs a few days in advance and lie around getting massages and soaking in the mineral water.

Two things: 1 - I am not signing up right now as I don't want to be "self-removed" and am not sure yet of my ability to pull this off. When I do sign up, it will be 90-95% sure. 2 - I'm half thinking of posting this a separate trip! Again, we (me and the droves who will sign up to join me) will not necessarily be up to your pace thus I have a better chance of ending up with someone to hike with -- and also I could share transport down to Hot Springs with others. What do you think? I could sign up here and still end up with others to hike that portion, but wondering if it would be more successful as a separate trip. Actually, I think it would be neat if among the entire club we could put together a total thru-hike in 2011...imagine, the "NEOHBC" could complete a total thru-hike, just with different people doing each section!

I mapped out the route you have planned already on NP info. that was sent to me.
I can co-lead if someone wants to lead or just put their leadership stamp on it.
If you want to keep the trip open maybe someone will

If the trip is cancelled I am still going even if alone so if anybody is interested please contact me.

Chuck Keiper complete circumnavigation - CKT

CKT is a demanding trail, with some climbs similar to the BFT.    Not nearly as many views as the BFT, the best is at the main trailhead.  There is a sense of isolation when you hike this trail.  Many nice streams and a few waterfalls.  Most stream crossings do not have bridges.  Be careful, in places the sidehill is wearing out.  Yost and Eddy Lick Runs are very nice.  Diamond Rock Hollow on the East Loop will kill your legs.  Boggs Run has some camping.  Have fun and enjoy.

Shawnee Backpacking Trail - Southern Loop - Dog permission please?

Posted By:Alan

My plans for a dog sitter did not work. I normally take my dog backpacking but felt that it may be muddy and wet so I thought it best not to even ask about this outing since I had plans for someone to watch him. Now I need to ask if it is ok with the leader and everyone else? I really want to do this backpack trip and is it ok if I bring my super well behaved, leashed, non-barking (unless I tell him to "speak") dog? If anybody has any difficulties with a dog then I really do understand so it ok but he truly is super well behaved and very quiet. He has no difficulties when it comes to backpacking and hiking, I take him all the time.
Thanks!

I'm looking for a ride and will happily share gas and tolls, etc.
My wife and I have only one car and she needs it for her business.
But I have many bicycles and can ride one with my gear to most places around Cleveland.
I'm reputed to be good company on a drive.

Thanks,
Marty Cooperman

Anyone else from the Cleveland area interested?

If you can be ready to go by 4:30 PM, we can easily take the route that goes through Oil City and add you to the party.

I live in oil city pa (16301). Depending which route you take you’ll drive right past my house. If you have room for one more I’d love to catch a ride.

Shawnee Backpacking Trail - Southern Loop - Removal

Sorry, but had to remove myself from the trip. Had some unexpected conflicts arise and have to take priority. To anyone who hasn't done this trip, it is wonderful! I did the entire loop about this time last year and really regret having to miss this trip. I was really looking forward to it. Everyone enjoy and be safe!

Sorry you won't be able to join us at Hickory Creek. Hope the knee and lungs get better ASAP. I'm sure there will be another course, though no specifics yet. Be well.
